Tesco was founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen from a market stall in London’s East End. In 1924, he created the Tesco brand name from the initials of a tea supplier, T. E. Stockwell (formally Messrs Torring and Stockwell of Mincing Lane), and the first two letters of his surname T.E.S CO. The first two Tesco stores opened at Becontree and Burnt Oak in 1931.[1] By 1939, Cohen owned a hundred Tesco stores. Over the years their business has grown and now Tescos operates in 12 countries around the world, employ over 530,000 people and serve tens of millions of customers every week.
