Argos.com was the pioneer of catalogue retailing in the UK. Argos uk first launched in 1973 and has almost 500 stores throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland. Approximately 98% of the UK population live within 10 miles of an Argos (www.argos.co.uk) store.
After nearly six years as a private company they were acquired by B.A.T. Industries Limited in 1979 and then demerged in 1990. Argos became a limited company again until it was acquired by GUS plc in 1998. Argos is now part of the Argos Retail Group, owned by GUS plc.
Argos is to grow capacity and improve customer service in Argos Direct, the delivery to home operation. Sales via Argos Direct grew by 50% compared to last year. It accounted for 16% of Argos' sales - up from 12% last year. Preparation for the construction of the new Argos Direct warehouse has started, with completion planned before the end of the current financial year.
Argos publishes a total of 48 million catalogues each year. 36 million of the main catalogue (with over 950 pages & growing) and 12 million Argos Additions catalogues (over 700 pages). Two editions are printed for each, Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter.
During the next three years Argos is planning to open 35 new stores a year employing an additional 2,000 a year.
